Newark Computing Services conducts their major hiring for student workers during the Spring of each year. The hours are flexible and students will have the opportunity to gain valuable real-world working experience in a thriving environment. Students of every major are encouraged to apply. NCS hires students taking 6 credits or more.

NCS Consultant - Apply Here

NCS consultants might work at the Help Desk or in any of the varied computing labs which NCS operates on the Newark Campus.  Consultants are the first line of assistance when someone needs help.
 
Responsibilities
 
  • ‚ÄčOpen Help Desk/Lab at the beginning of the day and securely lock area when closing at the end of the day (depending on your shift).

  • Ensure that university, campus, and lab rules are followed

  • Report all unusual occurrences during the work shift to the Site Manager

  • Ensure that the lab equipment and software is operational

  • Ensure that all printer paper trays are full

  • Ensure that handout and document trays are filled and in good order

  • Record usage statistics (e.g. printer cartridges replaced and pages printed)

  • Maintain the Help Desk/Lab in a neat, clean, and orderly manner, including consultant station

  • Maintain lab reference manuals and equipment in a safe and orderly manner

  • Submit completed payroll time sheet within specified time period

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Provide computing assistance to campus community not limited to faculty, staff and students

  • Assist clients in a thorough, efficient manner

  • Log all phone calls, email, and drop-by issues into the Tracking software

  • Create, update and maintain Help Desk documentation (handouts & web site)

  • Ensure that university, campus and lab computing rules are followed

  • Maintain reference manuals and equipment in a safe and orderly manner

  • ‚ÄčProvide technical support for Windows and Macintosh workstations to students living in residential housing (dorms)

  • Configure, trouble-shoot, and resolve networking problems with network cards and back-end networking hardware

  • Configure and trouble-shoot connectivity (TCP/IP) on desktop computers

  • Make minor repairs on broken network jacks in dorm rooms

  • Help users secure their systems with anti-virus and firewall software

 

CIF Repair Technician - Apply Here

Coordinated Instructional Facility (CIF) Technicians provides technical assistance to the NCS full time staff in diagnosing, monitoring, and repairing systems in the Newark campus computing labs, ensuring systems operate effectively and reliably.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for Windows and Macintosh workstations, printers, computer peripherals, and networks in the campus computing labs
  • Configure, troubleshoot, and resolve problems with hardware, system and application software, and new technologies
  • Assist in the testing, implementation, and deployment of enhancements and upgrades
  • Diagnose system malfunctions: All computer peripherals, pcs, macs, and printers
  • Perform regular printer maintenance
  • Document all repairs to CIF equipment
  • Assist in maintenance of physical inventory of equipment, and provides reports as needed
  • Keep accurate records regarding work completed and parts used
  • Submit completed payroll time sheet in a specified time period
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to OSHA standards (70 lbs) as required
  • Ability to perform work responsibly and orderly
  • Work in a team environment with NCS full time staff, lab managers, and lab consultants

This position provides administrative support to the Newark Computing Services (NCS) staff members. Works closely with the Director, Department Administrator and staff members of the Newark Computing Services Department. Handle routine duties essential to day-to-day operation. The position requires good understanding of various services provided by OIT, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment. This position is also responsible for documentation, filing, and other administrative functions that support front office operations. Will also perform other tasks and special projects as assigned by department administrator.
